GEORGIAN STYLE

GEORGIAN STYLE BUILDINGS

The Georgian style has a long history in the U.S. Christopher Wren, a British architect is credited with bringing this style to us in the early 1700’s. Pattern books illustrating construction techniques, moldings, and assemblies were brought over from England, helping to spread the popularity of this style.

The style is typified by rigid symmetry around a central axis, often including wings to balance each side of the building and including interior symmetry of spaces as well. Hip roof systems were common, as were large double hung windows.  A variety of building materials were used in various parts of the country including brick and wood.
