Last year one of our clients asked us to look at a project outside our region. What should have taken less than 30 minutes to find for him wasn't available online; in fact it was a 30 day wait to obtain what we needed. The delay in obtaining basic site information killed the project altogether.

 

That experience got us thinking. . . . why does every city organize site and building information so differently? (or not at all).  More importantly, shouldn’t there be a better way?

 Armed with these simple questions, we started asking architects what their experiences have been. The stories we have heard have been very revealing. Exhorbitant paid subscriptions to access GIS maps to obtain only 1 piece of information. Online Zoning maps not available for major metropolitan areas. Entire cities that don't have property dimensions available - architects just "guessing" about property line locations.

 

I don't know about you, but that sounds like a potential for disaster. . .  and lawsuits. . .  and change orders.
